During the build up to the series, a number of masks were tried out. The final design still hadn't been settled on even when filming began on the first episode.

A close up shot of the mask worn by Michael Lipton. It seems to have been made from fabric.

Van Williams in a very early test shot which must have been taken around the time the ABC trailer was filmed. This is the mask Van  wore in the photo taken on the Batman set with Adam West.

Bruce Lee wore this mask in both screen tests. There were a few more designs before the producers finally settled on one that everyone was happy with.

This appears to have been taken at the same test session. Note the floor and carpet. Maybe a picture of the two together will re-surface at some point.

A transparency. It has a similar 'feel' to the one of Van Williams (right) and may have been taken at the same photo session.

In late June 1966, stock footage was filmed of Bruce Lee and Van Williams operating the controls that revolved the Black Beauty into position. It was intended to be used repeatedly throughout the series. However, it would all have to be re-shot...

It seems that George Trendle really disliked the masks worn  in the first episode. So, the design was changed again. Plaster casts were taken of the actors faces which resulted in a much smoother fit.

Mask design was an ongoing process throughout the one season run of the series.
